Helical Pile Underpinning for Environmental Remediation in Hackensack, NJ

Shore Systems Group, LLC partnered with EnviroTrac Ltd. to support a large-scale environmental remediation project in Hackensack, NJ. This complex project required both structural underpinning and soil excavation to remove petroleum-impacted soils while maintaining structural integrity for existing residential buildings.

Project Overview

What

This project involved a large-scale environmental remediation effort requiring structural support for a two-story residential structure and a multi-unit, four-story apartment complex. Shore Systems Group installed a combination of cased pull-down helical pile underpinnings and slide rail shoring box sets to ensure stability while excavating and backfilling over 2,700 tons of petroleum-impacted soil across multiple properties. A full pump-and-treat dewatering system was implemented to maintain groundwater suppression throughout the process.

Where

Hackensack, NJ

When

  • Kickoff: August 5, 2024

  • Completion: October 11, 2024

Methodology

How

Shore Systems Group employed a deep foundation system using:

  • (25) Chance™ SS5 Square Shaft grout-filled 6” schedule 40 PVC New Construction 8”/10”/12” Helical Pile Pull Downs, installed to a maximum depth of 21 feet.

  • A slide rail shoring box system to facilitate deep excavation while maintaining site stability.

  • A pump-and-treat dewatering system to control groundwater and prevent contamination spread during excavation and backfilling.

Why

The helical pile underpinning system was necessary to support existing structures during the excavation and remediation of petroleum-impacted soils. Without reinforcement, soil instability could have compromised building integrity, making structural support a critical component of the project.

Overcoming Challenges

Problems and Solutions

This project required extensive coordination due to its scale and urban setting. Challenges included:

  • Permitting and Approvals: Shore Systems Group navigated multiple layers of regulatory compliance, securing necessary permits and coordinating with fire and building inspectors, zoning enforcement, and local authorities.

  • Traffic and Safety Coordination: Given the project's location, the team arranged police and traffic control details to ensure safety during excavation and material transportation.

  • Stakeholder Communication: Coordination was essential with tenants, property owners, and associated board members to minimize disruption and maintain smooth project operations.

  • Soil Disposal Management: Shore Systems Group ensured the proper handling and disposal of contaminated soils in compliance with environmental regulations, working with Certified LSRP clean fill facilities.

Conclusion

By leveraging innovative engineering solutions and meticulous project management, Shore Systems Group successfully completed the Hackensack, NJ remediation project on time and within budget. This project exemplifies Shore’s expertise in helical pile underpinning and environmental remediation, demonstrating a commitment to safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
