HSB Garage Project, Villanova University
Shore Systems Group, LLC: Micropile Expertise at Villanova University
Shore Systems Group, LLC was proud to partner with DVP Construction Group on the HSB Garage Replacement for Villanova University. This essential project provided a strong, durable foundation for the parking garage serving the Health Services Building, a critical facility on the university’s campus, located in Villanova, Pennsylvania.
Project Overview
What
The foundation for the HSB Garage Replacement required the installation of 168 micropiles, each with 10-foot-deep rock sockets designed to achieve a capacity of 600 kips. These micropiles were engineered to meet the demanding specifications of the foundation design.
Where
This new parking garage was constructed to support Villanova University’s Health Services Building, ensuring ample parking for staff, students, and visitors.
When
Work commenced in June 2024, and Shore Systems Group successfully completed the micropile installations by early September 2024, staying on schedule for this vital project.
Methodology
How
Shore employed a micropile system that drilled into the competent Gneiss bedrock beneath the site. This approach ensured the creation of high-capacity piles capable of supporting the weight and demands of the parking structure.
Why
Surface soils at the site consisted of 20 to 30 feet of weak, consolidating material overlying the Gneiss bedrock. Without proper reinforcement, these weak soils could settle over time, leading to structural cracks, shifts, or even failure. The micropile solution provided the necessary stability and strength to prevent these potential issues.
Overcoming Challenges
Problems and Solutions
The project presented several logistical challenges, including limited site access between a utility building and train tracks, high groundwater levels, and the need for carefully sequenced operations.
To address these difficulties, Shore collaborated closely with DVP Construction to maintain active site operations throughout the drilling process. By maintaining constant communication and making real-time adjustments, Shore ensured that follow-up work could proceed smoothly while pile installations continued.
Additionally, Shore leveraged its engineering expertise to reduce the diameter of the piles without compromising the design capacity. This adjustment delivered significant cost savings while adhering to the strict foundation requirements.
Conclusion
Through meticulous planning, advanced engineering, and seamless collaboration with DVP Construction, Shore Systems Group delivered a strong, cost-effective foundation for Villanova University’s HSB Garage Replacement. This project highlights Shore’s commitment to excellence and problem-solving, ensuring the long-term stability of critical infrastructure.
