Earth Retention & SOE: West Chester, Pennsylvania

Support with steel H piles and lagging wall to utilities buried beneath the ground next to the existing building.

Shore Systems Group L.L.C. completed a job in West Chester, Pennsylvania, where the future plans for an underground parking garage with multiple levels extending above grade called for earth retention to secure an existing utility bank. The building location in direct proximity to an existing structure with a utility bank running between the existing and the new building called for what is commonly referred to Support Of Excavation (SOE) or Earth Retention. This H-pile and lagging wall employs vertical steel H piles drilled and grouted in place. Between these H-piles an internal whaler was installed to keep the structure rigid. Due to the proximity of the neighboring building the design could not use tiebacks, also, the limited room to work between the location and the SOE wall left no room for an external whaler. The wall is finished with wood lagging boards to hold back the earth and protect the utilities behind the wall.  This saved the client the massive costs involved in relocating these services and the shut down that inevitably come with that work.

Our crews, led by several different of our awesome and experienced foremen, pre-augered and installed soldier piles (HP14x73), with an 18” grout column to a depth of 25 feet. The work included the installation of a 36’ waler and a 540 sq. ft. wall using 3” x 12” timber lagging.
